The Garden Site

Developed on land purchased by Cecil Rhodes in 1895, the area was proclaimed the National Botanic Gardens of South Africa in 1913.

Room to Wander

Around four thousand of species of plants grow here, representing nearly a quarter of all the types found in South Africa. Because of the varied climates in the country, no single location can cover the entire range.

Art in the Gardens

Amongst the shrubs there are some impressive stone sculptures which are part of a permanent exhibition of Shona Art from Zimbabwe.

Protea

In the Gardens there are many species of Protea which is the national flower of South Africa. I think this one is Protea Nerifolia.

Strelitzia

The Strelitzia, or Bird of Paradise Flower, which is a native of South Africa, bears a mass of spectacular blooms several time a year.

An Historical Setting

Around a native-style rondavel is a garden of culinary and medicinal herbs. Many are still in use today.
