The Prison

The prison compound where anti-apartheid freedom fighters were imprisoned during the latter half of the 20th century.

Nelson Mandela’s Cell

“My cell was tiny.. I could walk from one side to the other in three steps. When I lay down, my head touched one side and my feet the other.”

Nelson Mandela’s Garden

A garden was one of the few things in prison that Nelson Mandela felt he could control. Being in charge of a small piece of earth was to him, like having a small taste of freedom.

The Shore Line

When the prisoners were sent to collect seaweed for use as fertiliser in Japan, they saw the sea in front of them “shining in the morning light”.

Penguins

The antics of the penguins provided entertainment for the prisoners as they watched them “strutting about like clumsy soldiers.”

Freedom

Nelson Mandela was moved from the Island in 1982, but he kept up the fight for all political prisoners. He, and his companions still on Robben Island, were finally released in 1990.
